Knitting the net
The woman is repairing a fishing net. In Dutch we call this ‘netten boeten’ and a lady who’s doing this is called a ‘nettenboetster’.
‘Boeten’ is derived from doing penance, as in repairing the damage.
In the dunes, where the nets were drying, the nettenboetsters used a fine needle and fine cotton to fix the job.
For a long time it was compulsory to wear local costumes.
