Rhine
Around the 12th century, the natural mouth of the Rhine into the sea silted up because of sand.
In the centuries that followed, several attempts were made to restore this estuary.
This outlet has been in operation since 1807 and ensures that the excess water from the Rhine can be discharged into the sea.
It was excavated entirely by hand!
