The Fleet

When ports were established in Scheveningen and IJmuiden around 1900, it also became possible to use ships without a flat bottom.

As a result, the last ‘bomschuiten’ came ashore in Katwijk in 1913 and the Vuurbaak extinguished its lights a few years later.

The Katwijk fleet eventually grew out to be the largest fleet in the Netherlands in the 1960s!

Now walk a bit along the Boulevard in a northerly direction.

Opposite the house with the same number as the now well-known KW, you can find another boat.

If this lifeboat is going to rescue the KW88, should they go port or starboard?
