Monumental

On our left, but to the middle man’s right side, you see the god Neptune and on his left, the god Mercury.

The family who owned the ‘In den Vergulden Turk’ building were textile traders in angora wool and camel hair and mainly traded with the Middle East, hence the Oriental on the facade. The gods symbolize overseas trade.

Go back to the entrance of the Penshal.

To the right of the Vleeshal you will see the imposing city hall of Leiden.

On the Renaissance facade you can find various decorations, which are clearly visible due to the recent restoration.

The facade is unique, because it is also the longest of its kind in the Netherlands.

We measured the whole facade step by step.

How long do you think this facade is?
