Leighton
The oldest mention of Leiden is from around the year 860, in which the name Leighton is mentioned.
Due to its favorable location along the river Rhine, this place was able to grow from a village to a real city.
Canals and city walls were built, with gates like this in front of you, which came in handy later on.
In the Eighty Years’ War in 1573, the city was sieged for a year.
